The Family Notebook: Your Most Important Organizational Tool
Over the years we’ve realized the most important tool for keeping our families organized is a 3-ring binder. Our Family Notebook reduces the chaos created by the various schedules and miscellaneous papers generated by multiple family members. Now we corral all those loose notes and forms into the binder so they’re not scattered all over the house. It even serves as a safe holding place for pending items, like permission slips or picture order forms, that eventually have to be returned to school. Our Family Notebooks stay handy in the kitchen and even the kids know how to find information in it that they need. This is just one more way we can “look well to the ways of our households” (see Proverbs 31:27)!
Choose a one or two-inch binder, which is thick enough to adequately hold all your essentials but not so heavy that it’s too cumbersome to carry. Use a 3-hole punch and clip papers right into the binder or slip them into plastic page protectors. A zippered pencil pouch can hold pens, pencils, and dry erase markers, so you can easily write on and wipe off the page protectors. This makes it simple to fill out a weekly calendar or menu plan without having to reprint a new form each week.
Basics of an effective Family Notebook:
3-ring binder
plastic page protectors
transparency (wet-erase) markers
3-hole punch
tabbed divider pages or stick-on divider tabs
zippered pencil pouch to hold markers, pencils, paperclips, sticky notes
What should we keep in a Family Notebook?
school calendars, team schedules, class rosters, cleaning routines, babysitter instructions, church directory, receipts, medical information, whatever you need to keep up with!
