The Joy of an Organized Garage
Garage sale season is just around the corner, so here are some organizing guidelines to help you gear up for it. Take advantage of a warm sunny day and plug in some loud happy music. If you have children, put them to work and make it a productive family project. (Bribe or pay them to help if necessary!)
- If you did not use something last year, chances are you won’t use it this year either. Keeping things that you never use is hoarding! Don’t be selfish and wasteful with your belongings, share them with someone who needs them. Either hang those cabinets you bought two years ago for garage storage or pass them on to someone else.
- Determine what is worth keeping. Remember, keepers are those things that make your home “yours”—they reflect your family’s personality, make your lives easier, and bring you joy. If you're going to keep something, however, you must plan on when and how often you will use it, where you're going to keep it, and if you can afford to maintain it. If you’re only going to use that edger once a year, it would be less hassle to get rid of it and pay the boy down the street to do it for you instead of tripping over it all year in your garage.
- Store like things together. Keep all painting supplies together. Store tools in one place. Organize hooks, bolts, nails, screws, etc. in jars or bins so you can easily find what you need. Use a basket or box to contain wire, cords, and string. Corral all sporting equipment like balls and golf clubs in one area.
- Designate a home or “center” for each item and activity that will be stored or performed in your garage space. Specify where all paint supplies will go, for example. Where will you perform small mechanical repairs? Make sure all the proper tools are located near this spot. Return tools to their proper place when you have finished your task. (This keeps you from having to go buy a new hammer every time you want to hang a picture.)
- Limit duplicates. Every time we clean out the garage we’re amazed at how many duplicates we have of certain things. If you discover multiples of one tool, keep the best and get rid of the rest.
